An Inspector Calls has become one of the ‘classics of mid – 20th Century English theatre’, and is studied as a prescribed text for many schools in the UK and Europe.
A strong cast is needed. You will have nothing to hide behind in this play, particularly as the cast will remain on stage, in full view for the entire play. Characters do exit and enter but will be kept in view, in other areas of the ‘house’, or towards the back. No one can escape.
The Cast
Arthur Birling: Affable, complacent, confident self-made businessman with an eye to social status.
Sybil Birling: Of higher social status than her husband – lacks warmth but is impressive in an icy sort of way.
Shelia Birling: The attractive, charming daughter. Has a rebellious streak and matures as the truth emerges.
Eric Birling: The half-shy, half assertive troubled son. Has a drinking problem Like his sister matures during the play and develops a certain strength not obvious to begin with.
Gerald Croft: The son of Sir George Croft, engaged to Sheila The easy mannered, well bred man about town.
Inspector Goole: Has presence and inner power. Something mesmerising about him.
Edna: She is the Birling’s maid.
