Centrestage Theatre Company is a vibrant community theatre situated in Orewa on Auckland’s fabulous Hibiscus Coast. Positioned behind the Council Building in Centreway Road, Orewa the complex is local landmark.
Founded in 1956 as the United Players (Orewa) Inc., the society for many years operated in a small one hundred seat hall in Orewa. The membership was seven hundred and comprised enthusiastic theatre goers of all ages from the district.
The society had always hoped to establish a proper theatre of its own and by the mid 1980’s had set up a building fund that contained $80,000 from numerous fund raising events. It soon became an urgent project when the current premises were condemned. In spite of its endless limitations, United Players nevertheless had acquired an outstanding success record in a wide range of musicals and plays.
In 1987 the Orewa Theatre Trust was incorporated with the aim to not only be the guardians of the land and eventual theatre, but to oversee the design, building and funding of a 214 seat theatre complex suitable for a variety of uses and to generally assist on the promotion of the performing arts in the area.
